Turtle Magic Nature Storytime

Now you see them, now you don't! Turtles have a lot of tricks up their shells. Come uncover some of their tricks for yourself. This hour of nature fun awaits 3 to 6 year olds with accompanying adults.

We're being invaded not by outer space aliens but by alien plants and animals. Uncover what foreign species are taking over our native communities and what can be done to help control their spread. You will have a chance to make several unique crafts including a smashed-plant bandanna. Bring your own bandanna or purchase one that day for a small fee. Drop in for a few minutes or more than an hour for some nature fun. Adults are encouraged to participate with the children.

Wisconsin Butterflies

Fluttering by on colorful scaled wings, butterflies brighten a summer day. Susan Borkin from the Milwaukee Public Museum will share what butterflies call Wisconsin home, how to identify their families and when and where to find them. This program is best for people over 8 years old.

Explore the Red Oaks of Greenbush Outdoor Adventure

Greenbush)
Take an adventure through the Red Oak Habitat Protection Area and Red Oak State Natural Area. Learn how this special forest is being managed and explore the area for its unique resident plants and animals. We will meet at the Greenbush Kettle Parking Lot and then car pool to the Red Oaks State Natural Area. This program is most appropriate for adults and youth over 12 years old.

Join Ken Lonnquist for a wonderfully entertaining evening of music and merriment. Ken is a musician for all ages who is sure to delight the entire family. This is an outdoor concert so remember to bring your lawn chairs and blankets. In case of inclement weather, the concert will be held at the Ice Age Visitor Center.

Look through a telescope or binoculars to bring into focus the wonders of the night sky. With the help of experienced night sky observers from the Northern Cross Science Foundation, spy distant planets, dumb-bell nebulas, globular clusters and so much more. The program will be held only with clear skies. This program is best for people over 8 years old.

Kayak Connections

Have you ever wanted to try kayaking, but were not sure how to get started? Then this program is a must for you! Tom Koeppen and friends from the Northeast Wisconsin Paddlers will introduce you to the sport of kayaking. They will cover what gear and skills are needed, where to go kayaking and how to connect with classes and kayaking groups. This program is most appropriate for adults and youth over the age of 10 years.

Wildflower Walk Exploring Nature Program

Join us as we stroll down a forest trail in search of beautiful spring wildflowers. We’ll spend time identifying them and sharing some of their lore. The 12 Hours of Northern Kettles Mountain Biking Challenge

Greenbush Trails (located off Kettle Moraine Drive between Hwy T and Hwy 67 near Greenbush)
Discover the challenge and camaraderie of endurance mountain biking on the Greenbush Trails. There will be solo classes and team relays that can compete in 12-hour, 6-hour, or 3-hour challenges. This is part of the Wisconsin Endurance Mountain Bike Series (WEMS). Funds raised at this event are used to develop new trails and/or maintain the trails already in use. Step into the Night Hike

As the sun sets and the light fades from the sky, the day animals retire and a new group of animals awakens. We will use all our senses to explore the world of the crepuscular (active at dusk and dawn) and nocturnal (active at night) animals. Bring your bug spray and sense of adventure. The night hikes are best for families/groups with children over the age of 5 years.

Calling all youth to explore the extremes of nature by participating in the Wisconsin Explorers program! The program involves completing a required number of activities in one of three age appropriate books (ages 3-5; ages 6-8; and ages 9+) to earn a very cool patch. Get some expert help from a naturalist who will work with youth on activities from one of the first four topic areas of the books.

With Randy Hetzel, naturalist, discover the intriguing life cycle of frogs, toads and salamanders and what hazards they face. You will have an opportunity to meet many live animals. Tree Art Drop In at the Beach

Come celebrate the wonders of the forest by creating some tree art. We will be doing leaf printing, nut stamping, leaf rubbings and more. National Trails Day

On this Saturday no trail passes are required for Wisconsin State Park System properties to mountain bike, horseback ride or bike the Rails-to-Trails trails.

Learn to Fish Rodeo Drop In at the Beach

Long Lake Recreation Area Fishing Pier (located off Division Road north of Hwy F near Dundee)
Let the fishing fun begin! The rodeo includes Backyard Bass Casting, Fill the Tackle box, Fishing Regulations Quiz, Avoiding Hazards, Just Not Knots, What’s that Fish? and Baiting your Hook. After completing the rodeo, experienced anglers on the fishing pier will help hone your newly acquired skills. Special surprises and prizes await all who participate. Bring your own gear or fishing gear will be provided for those who need it. The rodeo is best for people over the age of 6 years old.

Dr. Jack Bartholmai will provide some tips on capturing wildlife images. He’ll focus on techniques to get close to wildlife and to improve the composition of your pictures. The presentation is tailored to beginning and intermediate photographers. This program is best for people over 10 years old.

Lake-2-Lake 10K Trail Run/Hike
Family Fun Walk Around Mauthe Lake
June 6, start time 10:00 am (Sunday)
Mauthe Lake Recreation Area (located off Hwy GGG south of Hwy SS near New Prospect)
Join us for the second annual Lake-2-Lake 10K Trail Run/Hike being held on the Lake-to-Lake bike trail between Long Lake and Mauthe Lake. There is also the 2-mile Family Fun Walk Around Mauthe Lake traversing the Tamarack Trail. The run/hike and walk start at 10:00 am. Registration is from 8:00 to 9:30 am. Cost of the run/hike is $20/person until May 7, $25/person between May 8 and May 21, and $28/person after May 21. The Family Fun Walk fee is $12/person or $40/family. The fee includes an event T-shirt (if registered by May 21), a goodie bag and light snacks. Proceeds benefit the Friends of the Kettle Moraine, the Long Lake Preservation Association and the Dundee Long Lake Lions Club. Rare Blooms: Orchids Outdoor Adventure

Orchids are plant treasures of the Kettle Moraine. Discover where they grow and how we can protect them. Don't forget your cameras. Learn to Fly Fish Exploring Nature Program

Do you marvel at those fly fishing anglers, but can’t quite figure out how they do it? Come to Mauthe Lake to learn from an experienced fly fisher the correct way to use fly fishing gear and tackle to catch a whole variety of fish. Bring your own gear, if you have some. A limited number of rods and reels will be available for participants’ use. Class size is limited to ten people. To register, call the Ice Age Visitor Center at (920) 533-8322 by June 10. People over the age of 16 need to have a valid Wisconsin fishing license to fish. This program is best for people over the age of 10 years.

Join us for an evening canoe trip around Mauthe Lake and up the Milwaukee River. As we paddle, we will keep our eyes and ears open for evening birds and other wildlife. To register, call the Ice Age Visitor Center at (920) 533-8322 by June 17. Class limit is 24 to 30 people without canoe equipment. Basic canoe skills will be covered. No experience is necessary. In the event of threatening weather, the program will be canceled. This program is best for people over the age of 8 years old.

Dept. of Natural Resources, will also cover how to become involved with the dragonfly citizen monitoring program. These programs are best for people over 8 years old.

This is the perfect program for people who have never kayaked and would like to learn. Join Jen Sazama, an American Canoe Association instructor, to learn the tricks and fun of kayaking. We will kayak around Mauthe Lake and up the Milwaukee River. To register, call the Ice Age Visitor Center at (920) 533-8322 by July 15. Class limit is 8 people without equipment for each session. No experience is necessary. The program is best for people over the age of 10 years. In the event of threatening weather, the program will be canceled.

Learn to Fish Rodeo Drop In at the Beach

Let the fishing fun begin! The rodeo includes Backyard Bass Casting, Fill the Tackle box, Fishing Regulations Quiz, Avoiding Hazards, Just Not Knots, What’s that Fish? and Baiting your Hook. After completing the rodeo, experienced anglers on the fishing pier will help hone your newly acquired skills. Special surprises and prizes await all who participate. Bring your own gear or fishing gear will be provided for those who need it. The rodeo is best for people over the age of 6 years old. Anyone over 16 years old need a valid fishing license to fish.

Biking through Habitats Outdoor Adventure

Lake-to-Lake Bike Trail
Hop on your bicycle to peddle at a leisurely pace along the Lake-to-Lake Bike Trail between the Mauthe Lake and Long Lake Recreation Areas. As we peddle we will investigate the natural habitats traversed by the trail. This is about an eight mile round trip. You need to provide your own bicycle, helmet and other bicycling gear. In the event of severe weather, the program will be canceled. Meet at the Mauthe Lake Pet Picnic Area Parking Lot (located off Hwy GGG south of Hwy SS near New Prospect). This program is most appropriate for adults and youth over 12 years old.

Sundews, pitcher plants and bladder worts capture insect prey to help them survive in nutrient-poor soils. Dr. Erica Young’s (asst. professor, Dept. of Biological Sciences at UW-Milwaukee) presentation will cover their incredible natural history and amazing ecology. She will also share what current research is being conducted on this charismatic group of carnivorous plants. This program is best for people over 8 years old.

Beautiful Butterflies Nature Storytime

You are invited to join our play as we act out the amazing life cycle of butterflies. Afterwards, we'll head outside in search of these beautiful insects. This hour of nature fun awaits 3 to 6 year olds with accompanying adults.

Step into the Night Hike

As the sun sets and the light fades from the sky, the day animals retire and a new group of animals awakens. We will explore the darkening world listening intently for all those night sounds. Searching for Hidden Treasures: Geocaching

With the help of the Wisconsin Geocaching Association learn how to use a hand-held GPS device and compass, and how to read a topographic map. Then try your new skills as you search for hidden treasures at selected geocache locations. This program is best for people over 10 years old.

Climb a Kame Outdoor Adventure

August 12, 6:30 - 8:00 pm (Thursday)
Ice Age Visitor Center (located off Hwy 67 half mile west of Dundee) and Dundee Mountain
After the glaciers melted away, they left behind a very distinctive landscape. Join us as we climb Dundee Mountain to gain a better understanding of how the glaciers created kames, eskers, moraines, kettles and outwash plains. The trail is one and half miles long and it does require hiking up and down a steep hill. We will meet at the Ice Age Visitor Center and then car pool the three miles to the Summit Trail on Dundee Mountain. This program is most appropriate for adults and youth over 12 years old.
